Peggy King Martin, age 77, of Arab, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Marshall Medical Center North. She was born to the late James and Lottie King on February 1, 1937 in Marshall County, AL. She was married to Charles Martin for 49 years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt to a family that dearly loved her. She was a 1955 graduate of Arab High School and a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church. She enjoyed watching her grandson play sports and supporting her family in all of their endeavors. Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband: Charles Martin; daughter and son-in-law: Angela and Scott Butler; grandson: Martin Dyar; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Lottie Sue and Phil Saraceno, Emma and Phil Cousins and sister: Dianne King; brothers: Bob King, David King and brother and sister-in-law: Danny and Sandra Glass; sister-in-law: Joyce Martin; and a host of nieces, nephews, other treasured family members and many dear friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by one brother: James Hugh King; sister-in-law: Lola King and brother-in-law: Wayne Martin. Funeral Service will be Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Sweet Home Baptist Church with Andy Brown and Jimmy Flynn officiating. Burial will be in the Sweet Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles E. “Charlie” Hunkeapillar age 67, of New Hope and formerly of Arab passed away Sunday Oct. 12, 2014, at Huntsville Hospital. Mr. Hunkeapillar was born on August 18, 1947, in Arab, AL to Burley and Elzie Lee Hollaway Hunkeapillar. He was a US Navy Veteran and a life time member of VFW Post 4835 in Illinois. He was retired from Caterpillar. Mr. Hunkeapillar was married to Sandra Hunkeapillar who passed away on Feb. 23, 1999. He is survived by his Daughters: Angela (Harold) Patterson of Grant and Casey Hunkeapillar of Opp, AL; Grandchildren: Austin (Lindsey) Patterson, Sam Patterson, Braden Hunkeapillar and Colton Reid; Great Grandson: Tucker Patterson. Glenda Watrous age 52, of Scottsboro (Swearengin area), passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014. She was born May 21, 1962 in Lawton, OK to Glen and Gwendolyn Slaughter. Mrs. Watrous was described by her family as very funny, outgoing and one of a kind. She was an LPN and loved being a nurse. Mrs. Watrous is survived by her husband: Jerry Hudson of Scottsboro (Swearengin); son: Derek Hudson of Swearengin; daughters: Samantha Cottom of Oklahoma, Candice O’Dell of Oklahoma and Kaila (Jonathan) Bloss of Oklahoma; grandchildren: Naomi Rhea Cottom, Hayli Marie Cottom, Joshua O’Dell Pilkington and Masie Ali Alonso. She was preceded in death by her parents: Glen and Gwendolyn Slaughter.

Mary Jean Ledbetter, age 81, of Guntersville passed away Wed. Oct. 22, 2014, at Barfield Health Care. Mrs. Ledbetter was born on August 15, 1933, in Blount County, AL to R.B. and Isol Vanzandt Townson. Mrs. Ledbetter was a Retired Nurse and worked at Barfield Healthcare prior to retirement. She was a member of Cedar Grove Church of Christ. She was married to Rayford Ledbetter who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her Parents: R.B. and Isol Townson, Sister: Betty Marlin and Brother: Paul R. Townson. Sara Clark age 82, of Arab, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 at Huntsville Hospital. She was born December 11, 1931 to Logan and Ola Lee Buckanan Boyd in Marshall County, AL. Mrs. Clark was a seamstress at Nell’s Cleaners. Mrs. Clark is survived by her sons: Keith (Lisa) Knight of Baileyton and Jeff (Sandra) Preston of Joppa; Daughter: Jeannie (Kenneth) Harbin of Arab; Brother: Kenneth Boyd of Cullman; Sister: Nada Ann Miller of Arab; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was a homemaker and she was a member of Arab 1st United Methodist Church. She is survived by her Daughters: Ruth Isom Kelley of Arab and Kimberly Kay Neese of Huntsville; Step Son: Oliver Taylor of Arab and Step Daughter, Melissa Ann McWhorter of Arab; Brother: Charles “Buck” Johnson of Atlanta; 9 Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren and a Host of Nieces and Nephews. Lou Kenney Morgan, age 75, of Union Grove, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at her residence. Mrs. Morgan was born June 17, 1939 in Marshall County to Harvey and Auzie Light Kenney. She was a homemaker and a previous resident of Decatur. She has called the Pine Hill area of Union Grove her home for the past 11 years. She is survived by brothers and sister-in-law: Marlon and Margaret Kenny & Larry Kenney; sisters and a brother-in-law: Sandra and John Watson & Louise Kenney; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband: Maury Gene Morgan(2008), her parents, a brother: Allen Kenney, and a sister: Joyce Baker . Funeral service was 2 pm Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, with Bro. Marvin Glispie officiating. Burial was in Mt. Oak/Ruth Cemetery. Billy Ray Atchley, 78 of Arab, the Ruth Community died Friday, October 17, 2014 in Barfield Health Care, Guntersville. Mr. Atchley was born August 28, 1936 and raised in Guntersville, later moving to the Arab area. He was the son of Alonzo and Lydia Mitchell Atchley. He served in the United States Army. He and the former Shirley Gail Cowen were married March 13, 1956. He was a dump truck driver with Kirkpatrick Concrete. He is survived by his wife: Gail Atchley; a son: Andy Ray Atchley; daughter and son-in-law: Renotta and Denny Frachiseur; three grandchildren and spouses: Dustin Ray Frachiseur (Andrea), Aundria Walley (Michael) and Dalton Ray Atchley; five great grandchildren: Hayden Ray Frachiseur, Holt Andrew Frachiseur, Noah Ray Walley, Austin Walley and Reid Walley. Memorial Service was 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, Brother Randy Blakely, officiating. Mr. Richard C. Dick Shipp
Mr. Dick Shipp, age 81, of Arab, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in Marshall Medical North ER. Mr. Shipp was born on May 28, 1933, inDeKalb County, the son of Herman D. and Minnie L. Shipp. He and the former Myris Painter were married in 1954. They were former residents of Georgia and have called Arab their home since 1962. He was an Aerospace Engineering Technician, retiring from NASA in 1976. He was a deacon at Gilliam Springs Baptist and a very active member, serving as Youth Leader and singing in the church choir. He is survived by his wife: Myris Shipp; sons and daughters-in-law: Mike and Wanda Shipp & Mark and Vicki Shipp; daughters and son-in-law: Melinda and Doug Hamilton & Michele Shipp; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a sister: Pat Shipp. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Celena Kay Shipp, his parents, and brothers: Merrill Shipp & Billy P. Shipp. Funeral service was 3 pm Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Gilliam Springs Baptist Church with Bro. Ralph McCollum, Bro. Gary Bean officiating. Hugh Knighton delivered the eulogy. Visitation was from 5:30 until 8 pm on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 in Gilliam springs Baptist Church. Mr. William Kenneth King
William Kenneth “KEN” King, 79 of Union Grove, the Cherokee Ridge Community died Thursday, October 16, 2014 in H. M. C. Shepherd’s Cove. Mr. King was born September 27, 1935 in Elba, Alabama, the son of Horace and Reba King. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama; he joined the United States Navy and Honorably served his Country for 20 years as a Naval Pilot. He did one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam, retiring from the Navy as Commanding Officer of VT-28 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Commander King, then with his Masters Degree in Geology, went to work for Sun Exploration and Production, eventually retiring as the District Geologist in in charge of Oklahoma and Texas. After retirement with Sun, he then moved back to Alabama to be close to his mother. Ken married the former Margaret Huse in 1962 and was a loving husband to Margaret for 52 years. Ken and Margaret had two sons: William Kenneth King Jr. and his wife, Cyndi and Kelly Huse King and his wife Diana; three granddaughters: Brandi King, Jazmyn Rodgers and Hannah Elizabeth King and a sister-in-law: Judy King; preceded in death by his parents: Horace and Reba King and by a brother: John Rann King. Memorial Service was 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, Reverend Don Ware, officiating and Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, directing. The family elected cremation with interment of cremains to take place at a later time in Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo, Alabama. Mrs. Voyles was born April 26, 1932 in Madison County, the daughter of Joseph E. and Flora Boyd. She was a Homemaker, a life time resident of the Arab area and had retired from Eaton Company. She was a member of the Arab Church of Christ. Robert J. “Robin” Noble, 53 of Arab died Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Noble was born June 28, 1961 in Marshall County, the son of Robert J. and Pirena Noble. He was a dry wall hanger and finisher with a construction company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing; he and his companion, Brenda Noble have shared their lives together for the past 22 years. He is survived by his companion: Brenda Noble; a son and daughter-in-law: Kyle and Marie Nobles; three daughters and a son-in-law: Bryonna Nobles, Terrie Bennefield and Regina and David Plylar; four grandchildren: George Nobles, Ethan Nobles, Madison Bennefield and Spencer Bennefield; a brother: Barney Lee Noble; a sister: Patricia Noble and several nieces, nephews and cousins; preceded in death by his parents: Robert J and Pirena Noble and a brother: Bobby Noble. Carrie Nadeen Mefford Dix, 51 of Arab, the Ruth Community died Wednesday, October 29, 2014, the results of an auto accident that happened at the intersection of Matt Morrow Road and Highway 231. Mrs. Dix was born February 8, 1963 in Madison County, the daughter of Walter and Mary Ailene Mefford. She was a former resident of Madison County, Lacey’s Spring and has called Arab her home for the past 19 years. She was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by husband: Paul Plunkett; a son: Bradley Mefford; daughter: Danielle Dix; granddaughter: Haley Mefford; five brothers and six sisters. The family elected cremation with a memorial service to be held at a later time. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel assisted the family with cremation arrangements.

Clara Nell Hawk Korczyk age 84, of Arab passed away Thurs. Oct 30, 2014, at Crossville Health and Rehab. Mrs. Korczyk was born on Sept. 25, 1930, in Marshall County to Edgar A. and Nellie Stone Hawk. She was preceded in death by her Parents, also her Husband, Joseph J. Korczyk on Oct. 11, 2004, and by her Brothers and Sister, Hulett, Edgar Junior, Welton and Verna Ruth Hawk. She was also preceded by one Nephew, Dale Stanley Hawk. Survivors include: Niece: Betty Margaret Hawk of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Nephews: Wade Hawk of Grand Prairie, TX and Howard Hawk of Arab. Clara was a graduate of Arab High School and Jacksonville State University with a B.S. degree in Education, and Auburn University with a Masters and an AA teacher’s certificate. She had a teaching career of 42 years in Alabama schools; Fairview in Cullman County, Dean Road School in Auburn, West Elementary in Decatur and Arab Elementary. In addition to her teaching she served as a caregiver for several family members. She was a member of Rocky Mount Primitive Baptist Church. A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Sat. Nov. 1, 2014, at 3 PM at the Brookwood Cemetery in Arab with Elder Mitchell Phillips officiating. Gober Funeral Chapel of Arab directing. Sara M. “Sally” Cox age 82, of Albertville formerly of Arab passed away Sunday November 2, 2014, at Shepherd’s Cove. Mrs. Cox was born on June 29, 1932, in Oneonta, AL to L.D. and Marie Oliver McDonald. She was married to Ray Cox and was an active member of Arab First Baptist Church for many years and enjoyed meeting with the Ladies Prayer Group regularly. She was also a member of the Arab Garden Club for many years. Mrs. Cox was Co Owner and Office Manager of Arab Telephone Company, later known as Brindlee Mountain Telephone Company for almost 30 years. She also served as Financial Secretary-Treasurer at Arab First Baptist for many years. Selena Martinez, 12 of Arab died Saturday, November 1, 2014 in Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. She was a 7th grade student of Arab Junior High School, born in Cullman County February 7, 2002. She enjoyed ISO Soccer, art, music and reading and was an active member of Liberty Church. Selena is survived by her mother: Misty Dawn Martin; three sisters: Adriana Martin, Anna Martinez and Brionna Martin; grandparents: Ernie and Lisa Adamson and Becky Landrum and several aunts, uncles, cousins, her church family, class mates and many dear friends. Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Liberty Church Campfire Campus (120 Kenyon Road; Arab, AL 35016), Brother Keith Hodges and Brother Rick Laster, officiating. Burial will be in Gilliam Springs Cemetery, Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, directing. Pallbearers will be Kevin Andes, Greg Best, Adam Foster, C J Jordan, James Patterson and Cecil Polk.
